Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance – Tackling Child Poverty

Thursday, 17 September 2026

Tina Jesson looks into Derby’s new Food 4 Thought Alliance membership scheme, launched in response to the stark reality that more than one in three children in Derby are living in relatively low‑income households.

Through a network of 17 food‑support partners, the scheme moves away from pre‑selected food parcels and instead allows members to choose the items that best suit their household. Families make a small contribution towards their shopping, with additional support coming from donors, funders and local businesses.

Chief Executive Paul Brookhouse explains how the model helps charitable resources go further while giving people greater dignity, independence and control. Members will also be connected with wider services designed to tackle the underlying causes of financial hardship — supporting long‑term resilience rather than short‑term crisis response.

The scheme is being officially launched at the Building a Better Community Support Network for Derby event, bringing together businesses, charities, faith groups, public services and volunteers to explore how Derby can build a more sustainable, joined‑up approach to food insecurity.
